Nanomembranes for Protein Mass Spec
This work is our most recent finding of how to use ultrathin nanomembranes in the quasi-dynamic mode for mass spectrometry of proteins. Instead of weighing the large molecules (corresponding to determine the ‘heavy mass’) we probe the ‘accelerated mass’ via the thermomechanical oscillations it is causing. The whole detector is compatible with the industry standard of MALDI-TOF, short for Matrix-Assisted-Laser-Desorption and Ionization combined with a Time-Of-Flight unit for mass discrimination.
